Additional Information
"Life Near Gjoa Haven" This exhibition features three Inuit artists who celebrate rituals and customs connected to seasonal change in northern Canada. Jessie Kernek, Martha Koguik and Bessie Nahalolik offer traditional perspectives on daily life with particular attention given to family and the indigenous animals that provide sustenance. Inuit communities are being transformed by technology and industrial activity like many cultures throughout the world that were previously isolated. The art works in this exhibition are a testimony to an enduring way of life practiced for many centuries that continues to reflect the Inuit heart and spirit. The exhibition was originally developed by the Alberta Society of Artists as part of the Alberta Foundation for the Art Travelling Exhibition Program, where it was hosted at a number of communities throughout Alberta. In an effort to continually make the art work in the Civic Art Collection accessible to the public The City of Calgary Public Art Program is pleased to present Life Near Gjoa Haven as a travelling exhibit for the enjoyment of the entire public school community.
