Book Dummy Creation Workshop for Kids-- Ages 8 - 15

Posted 2008-06-13 16:01 by Val Lawton Illustration

The artist works with kids either over a few sessions, or a few hours, to create miniature illustrated booklets, fondly known as book dummies. Val discusses the illustration process from start to finish using examples from her own books, and places special emphasis on the critical aspect of maintaining character consistency throughout the book.

This workshop also highlights the collaborative nature of text and pictures, the basic concepts of layout vis-a-vis maintaining a readers' interest, and story-flow and pacing.

Students are asked to come to this workshop with a pre-written story (original or borrowed), allowing them to jump right into the book-dummy creation process.

Students will compose a brief encyclopedia entry before building a 3-D paper sculpture mask. They will learn the basics of wearing a mask in drama and bring their creatures to life with a movement performance onstage in the Creative Kids Museum.

School Programs - Author in Residence

Posted 2008-02-20 11:58 by Simon Rose

For my Author in Residence program, I can be at your school for a week or longer. This allows me to cover certain topics in much more depth than would be possible during a regular author visit. We can also look at working with the students on a specific project.

School Programs - Author Visits, Presentations and Workshops

Posted 2008-02-20 11:36 by Simon Rose

Throughout the school year, I offer presentations, readings, author in residence programs and conduct workshops for children at schools and libraries all across Canada, the United States and around the world. Details are available on my wesbite here.

An author visit can be highly inspirational, inviting children to unlock their own creative potential, whatever form that may take, and encouraging them in their own writing. Younger students especially are almost always thrilled to meet a published author, particularly if they have read their books.

Our literacy workshops will not only help children with their writing and research skills, but they will also give children the opportunity to publish their work. Each individual workshop will produce their own Minizine, composed of all of the children's work. In addition, some articles will appear in our main magazine, YouthinkIt Magazine, which is published twice a year. Please click on the attachment below to view our brochure.
