THE WORKSHOPS

The Short Film/Developing Ideas and Visual Storytelling

This workshop will approach the short film as an artistic medium for self-expression, and will provide participants with an overview of the short film, with a focus on the telling of personal stories and developing ideas, themes and narratives through visual storytelling. Students will study examples of short films and break them down in order to better understand how they are created both technically and artistically.

Screenwriting/Story Development: This workshop will touch on the basic structural elements of writing the short film screenplay, but the primary focus will be on in-class writing and discussion in an effort to flush out creative film concepts and ideas. By the end of this three evening workshop, participants will have developed their ideas into a 3-5 page shooting script.

The Theory of Film Editing and its Implications on Directing:
This workshop will introduce participants to the theoretical aspects of editing. Editing is iterally the ‘language of film’ and through a solid understanding of what types of shots are used in filmmaking and how scenes are built from these shots, participants will learnow to plan their shoot by breaking their script into scenes and their scenes into shots.

The Super 8 Camera:

Participants will develop a thorough understanding of the Super 8 film camera. This workshop will focus on the image gathering process of filmmaking. Topics to be covered include camera care and proper operation, lighting control, exposure and film stock.

Creative Lighting Techniques on a Budget:

This workshop will introduce participants to creative lighting techniques for film, focusing in practical solutions to common problems. Through example and hands on exercises, participants will become accustom to the safe handling of lighting equipment, and will also begin to develop the skills necessary to create the look for their own films.

Editing Film and Video

In keeping in the Spirit of the CSIF’s $100 Film Festival, all films produced through the workshop will be exhibited on film. These workshops will focus on combining modern day digital editing with the more traditional methods of hand splicing.

Digital Editing with Final Cut Pro:

Will be an overview of the basics of editing film digitally on a computer. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills through in class exercises. The digital edit will be used to create an “off-line edit” of the film that will later be cut on Super 8. Once the films have been edited digitally, participant will learn how to cut on film so the film matches the video edit.
